A very bad faerie.

This was posted on the national faerie yahoo group. I thought I would pass it along here as a reminder that sometimes what we perceive to be an innocent act can be quite contrary to others.

As magical and wondrous as this past Beltane was at SMS, something happened that I must bring to attention.

I'll start by saying that, as we all know, there are many who attend who have various auto immune conditions and levels of sensitivities to things around them. I tend to think that most of us are aware of this and are considerate as well as educated on these things. A friend of mine in particular is quite sensitive - his T cells are bottoming out, he has many allergies and to boot he has heavy social anxieties. Him being surrounded by a few hundred people is not only a serious challenge but a risk.

The above friend was walking up towards the knoll when someone approached him, slapped him with some stinging nettles on the wrist, and said "you wont forget my name". Then upon walking off told him what he was just struck with. My friend found me, highly agitated - fighting back his anxieties, and presented his very swollen, red and blistered wrist. He had no idea what stinging nettles were and was in a panic. Mind you, he has been sent to the ER over things that most of our bodies can just shrug off. We got him taken care of and thankfully it cleared up. Although "you wont forget my name" was said this person never actually said his name. My friend was unable to spot this faerie again. It took him some time to calm himself and stabilize his mood.

Sitting in the smoking tent, some one mentioned that they had seen someone walking around with the nettles, smacking people with them as he did my friend. He didn't know this person and could not effectively describe them.

So, I am putting out this message to anyone who might know who this person is. Their actions were not only mean spirited, but possibly life threatening. In a land of love, caring and warmth, they were spreading malice and ill intent - carelessly at that.

What a whirlwind! That might be the most I've loved and laughed and grown in such a short time ever. I am so grateful to every single person that was at the gathering, as well as those meebers of our community that could not make it, for existing and for holding such amazing space for all of us.

I came to the gathering cranky, dissatisfied and full of petty ego driven baloney. I left it empowered, grateful, much humbled, and with a new perspective on my world. I learned things which, if it weren't for all of you fine folk, would have taken me years to learn.

I am by no means where I want to be, but I am miles upon miles closer to who I want to be.

Beading Party was Buzzing!!

Howdy y'all,

What a great time yesterday. Several of the local faeries showed up to Casa de los Mariposas, here in loverly (Judy)Garland, TX, for the bead stringing benefit. We put together nearly thirty strands of 'like-minded" beads to sell towards alleviating the travelling expenses for those lucky NOTX faeries that are able to make the trip to Short Mountain's Beltane celebration.

The beads, along with some covered tins and pens, will be for sale during the gathering either on the porch or in the breezeway of the goat barn. Wherever there is space. Thanks to everyone who participated. It is a sure sign of faerie artistic talent that my little orphan polymer clay beads now look as if they were meant to be together all along.

SO EXCITED FOR BELTANE! Chicago newbie offering ride, asking questions

Dear loves,

I am incredibly excited to go to Beltane this year.

I have never been to TN before or to a queer-focused Beltane. Really looking to give my queer spirituality a deep probing. Really.

Can any veteran help me / other newbies out with what to bring? I have been to Burning Man before, so I figured the standard for this TN event would basically be the same: radical self-reliance, something to contribute to the community, and of course, sparkling amazing outfits.

Please let me know if I'm wrong or there are any other specifics I should know about, or just drop a note and say hi! I'm excited to meet you all very soon.

I was living in Yemen for 7 months, just arrived in Chicago this week, and will be headed back to SFBay, CA for school sometime soon after Beltane.

I will be driving from Chicago, IL to Nashville TN the last day of April, where I will join a friend of mine. We then plan on heading over to Beltane together the next day, and will stay six days. If you would like a ride from Chicago or somewhere along the way, let me know!

Wish lists, queer communities etc

Greetings,

I was hoping that someone could help me out with this. I am the co-founder, of a now non-existant "intentional-community" Over the last few years we have aquired a lot of necessities and luxury items that I think other organizations would benefit from the use of. Also I have a lot of knowledge on how to aquire things these communities need for little or no cost, and would be willing to donate things for the benefit of these communities.

The problem I am having is that it is next to impossible to contact these communities, There arent very many Queer communities, and the ones who exist have websites that haven't been updated for years or ever. Is there any way to find out how my resources are best donated without going out to these locations?

I love the idea of being able to help, I just don't know where to start.

I just found this group today through the convoluted workings of out & about, nashfae and digging furiously. I have the same rising fervor of excitement many have mentioned this spring. What to bring to the gathering?

Yay! Well I am happy to be headed to greener pastures (moo) for Spring Gathering in TN and it got me thinking about what people bring to gatherings.. Both in a physical sense and a spiritual sense. While a tent, flashlight, water bottle, towels and a comfy sleeping bag is handy for any SMS gathering; there are also other things to think about adding to a pre-gathering checklist. I always seem to post something here about "intention" and things like that, but this time I wanted to post about something that is just as important for having a healthy, safe and fabulous gathering.

When 400 people from all over the world gather together in the woods and spend a week or so cooking, cleaning, shitting , making ritual, dancing, drugging, not drugging, drinking tea, teabagging, having sex and all that other stuff we do..(shhh gotta keep some of it secret!!!) there is always the reality that people will come in contact with bugs, viruses, sexually transmitted illnesses (STI's) which have an effect on the well being of each of us individually and collectively.

So I'm want to ask people a simple question to consider, whether you are headed to SMS or Wolf Creek or Wherever the winds may take you..

When was the last time you were tested for HIV or STI's?

Every six months is a recommended period of time for those who are sexually active, and it's good to at least know one's status once a year. I know that talking about this stuff is sorta like herding cats with faeries at times, everyone has their own views on HIV, transmission and personal risk and safety, but I wanted to put the thought bubble out there to the universe that we are not only responsible for our own health and well being, but that our community survival is also at stake. I'd like to go to a gathering where I don't find out that five more of my friends sero-converted due to either not knowing other peoples status or simply not wanting to know..

I'll love you either way poz, negative or not sure, I guess I thought that suggesting that peeps getting tested before gathering time might bring a little more awareness and care to our lovely reality we create in the woods. The reality is that yes, while some people with HIV are living longer and "surviving" with wonderful side effects, it ain't no picnic I assure you. I'm a short term survivor of 12 years with HIV. Got gas? Yes, hon, I do!

I have seen the statistic that up to 1/4th of all people that are HIV positive may not know they are carrying the virus. As I type this out, I feel like it's 1992 and I'll be branded a heretic of sorts for asking people to get tested, it's not very "faerie", but anyways I just want people to be informed and empowered in the choices they make..

In life and at gatherings there are many people who continue to insist on remaining blissfully unaware of their status. I always find the best policy is DO ask, DO tell, not be ashamed either way and encourage others to do the same. There was a time when I let fear get in the way of disclosure and was blissfully unaware... It took me being placed in a situation where I potentially infected someone and dealing with the guilt and shame of that experience to become more aware of things and more self loving...

So maybe a combination of testing before and talking with your faerie dance partner for the evening, week or life during your time in the woods is something to add to your gathering list...

I'm just sayin'.....

Hey ya'll hows it hangin? Well i happen to come across a RFD mag over at one of my buds house. I got to reading it, and I was totally speachless. "in a good way" I'm from Tennessee born and raised. I never thought there was a group of people like this. That there might be a gay community without the cat scratches, if you feel me. I know all about the Beltane holiday. My sisters and I belong to a pagen group that has like gatherings. I got to surfin the net a found out that there is one here in tennessee. Not only that but it was a gay celebration. I'm so stoked to have found this out. Okay to the point. I'm lookin for some people that might be willing to give me more info on ur group. AND it would make my summer to attend Beltane with people of like mind. So, I hope to hear back!!!

Headin out on an adventure

Howdy All,

I am on the verge of buying an old makeout van or a truck with camper . I am slowly mapping out a loose itenerary for takin the doglin on a giant cross country trek stopping at different intentional communities(wolf creek, zuni mtn, kawashaway,twin oaks, etc.) and festivals (autonomous mutant fest, lamas @ zuni, hobo fest, some political events, etc) and more. We are planning on taking about a year, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less, as nothing is set in stone.

Hi, Ive been on tribe 1 yr and am still exploring this online community. Im want to do some traveling this spring,/summer and heard that beltaine is a good time to visit SMS. iv never been to SMS. Id really be interested in traveling there and meeting with my brothers, forming new ties with community. I may drive from home (PA) to there and could stay perhaps 2 wks.
Id be interested in ideas suggestions from people who know the area, and SMS, and /or know of places i may stop on the way, as it will likely be a 2 day trip, and i dont want to stay at motels. I may be able to offer a ride to folks not to far from my route, if they dont have a lot of gear...

Dear lovely faeries,

This email contains instructions for participating in and creating heart space for this weekend's international on-line faerie heart circle. We encourage you to read this entire email, which includes important information about the unique world of on-line heart space. We strongly encourage you to join us--- we have received RSVPs from faeries around the world, including our brave fae sisters in Bangkok, who will be waking up to log in at 4AM Sunday, Thailand time. Faeries have also RSVPd from Seoul, Madrid, England, Germany, and Australia. We will be well-represented with Americans and Canadians also.

Why are we doing it? Because the heart circle is such an important tool/technology for spreading faerie consciousness. Some faeries are unable to access heart circles at in-person gatherings. We also are aware that a new generation of potential faeries is making a regular home on the internet, and we need to figure out how to engage with them. So we are doing this experiment.

This email, describing that experiment, includes four sections:

1) Logging in to the heart space
2) Creating the heart space
3) Cautions and Caveats and
4) Documenting the experience (so we can improve it even further in the future).

Please note: the password for the Radical Faerie chatroom you will enter is Yoohoo . We encourage you to print out this entire email and have it handy during the heart circle.

A word of encouragement: Though these directions may seem complicated, they are easy to learn, and your log-in process will become very easy once you have experimented a bit. So please, if you have time, play around in Stickam prior to this weekend's circle.

1) LOGGING INTO THE HEART SPACE (we encourage you to try these steps prior to the circle itself-- you can try out the chatroom directions on another existing chatroom):

a. Using Stickam as a site for heart circles: Stickam is designed to allow multiple users to join a video/audio/text conversation. When you join the Radical Faerie room, you can 1) see and hear participants in the room who are on camera or have microphones; 2) transmit your own video/audio; and 3) enter text into the text chat. If you do not have a video camera or microphone, you can still participate in the circle by typing your comments into the text box.

b. Joining Stickam: Point your brower to http://www.stickam.com/viewJoin.do . Sign up for a free membership. You may want to consider using your faerie name as your login name. Complete the registration process.

c. Now login to Stickam with your username and password.

d. Point your browser to the Chat Room area (listed on the menu at the top of the page): http://www.stickam.com/chatRoomEn.do . A list of available chat rooms will appear. Scroll through the list and find the room named "Radical Faeries". Click on the button "Enter" next to this chat room, and you will be prompted for a password. Enter: Yoohoo . Note: The Radical Faerie chatroom will be available starting at 3PM Eastern Standard Time Saturday, USA, and the circle will begin at 4PM Saturday EST. Please join the room early if you wish to try out its features prior to the beginning of the circle. We are passwording the chatroom in order to avoid the possibility of random, curious stickam members joining the room.

e. You will now be asked to click on acceptance of the Stickam rules. Click OK.

f. You will now enter the Radical Faerie heart space. The room contains three windowpanes: 1) a windowpane containing 12 boxes in which you can see participants who have cameras/microphones. 2) a windowpane for text chat and 3) a windowpane that lists all faeries who are currently in the heart space (including you).

g. Special Note for those wishing to use video/audio: In order to use the video/audio feature, you must set the Flash player to find the video camera and microphone on your computer. To do this, position your cursor over one of the twelve video boxes, and right click (Windows)/ ctrl click (Mac) to bring up the Flash options. Look for the small icons for a microphone and a video camera, and click on these to make sure that they are set corrrectly for the microphone and video camera resident on your computer. For those who need help with this, please arrive at the Radical Faerie heart space early and we will do a short tutorial on setting up cameras/microphones. If you are able to get on-line in advance to try video/audio in another chatroom we recommend this.

Once your audio/video is set up, you can click on one of the 12 available boxes and a dialogue box will pop up asking if you allow the flash player to access your video and audio. If you click "Allow", your video and/or audio will stream into the stickam system, and you will be viewable and hearable.

h. How do I choose which faeries I get to see in the video boxes? You have the ability to choose which faeries you see in the 12 video boxes. If there are more than 12 faeries with us this weekend who have video or audio, you can "dock" and "undock" faeries from the windows. To undock (remove) someone, simply click their window and look for a small "x". When you click on this "x", the faerie in that window will disappear (though you will still be able to hear them). To "dock" (add) a faerie into an empty box, click on her/his name in the list of faeries to the right, and if he/she has a camera/mic available, you will see the "dock" option when you click on their name, and simply click on "dock" to have them appear in one of the empty boxes. Note: You can only dock someone if there is an empty box for them, so you may need to undock someone if all boxes are occupied.

i. A note on lag: Since stickam will be managing audio/video/text streams from around the world, there is sometimes a lag from the time you type/speak, to the time that others are able to read/hear. Please be patient and wait for the words to arrive.

j. A note on muting: We recommend muting your microphone if you are not speaking. This both reduces noise, and reduces the amount of information that stickam must process, thus reducing lag. So please- mute your mic if you are not speaking.

k. A note on freezing: Sometimes (depending upon your internet connection) you will see the room freeze up. If this occurs, click on the "Reload" button at the top of the chatroom.

2. CREATING THE HEART SPACE

a. A note on time: Since participants will be joining us from multiple time zones, and both daylight and standard time zones, we encourage you to check to make sure that you join us at the right time. The heart space will be opened by Lady B, who is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. This is Eastern Time Zone, USA. You can see the time details for Philadelphia at http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=198 . The heart space will open at 3PM EST Saturday, and the circle will begin at 4PM EST Saturday. If you have any questions or are unsure of your relative time, please contact us at bartlett.cd@gmail.com .

b. Grounding: We recommend that you arrive at the heart space early if possible. You should have some time to do personal grounding, become acquainted with the space, and ask questions. We welcome grounding rituals, such as burning of sage, lighting candles, chanting songs, etc. We have a huge global heart space to create, and we need you to bring all of your magic and rituals with you.

c. Being present for the Circle: It may be tempting to multitask while in the heart circle (check email, surf the web, etc.). We recommend that you take a risk of being fully present for the circle while it lasts.

d. Opening of the Circle: The Circle will open at approximately 4:05 PM EST Saturday. We will most likely follow a format that looks (approximately) like this:

1. Introduction to the Heart Space / How to participate/ What is a heart circle
2. Introductions of all circle participants (brief hello-- name, and one fun detail about yourself).
3. Announcements from the Circle
4. Grounding of the Circle
- Grounding Ritual
- Calling the Directions (we still need folks for many of the directions- contact bartlett.cd@gmail.com if you are interested).
i. North
ii. South
iii. East
iv. West
v. Center (Dirt, Bremerton, Washington State, USA).

- Reading of the Tarot Card (FireRising, Atlanta, Georgia, USA)

e. Sharing from the Heart (we will complete at least one round of the circle, and seek consensus about whether to continue after that).

f. Closing ritual

3. Cautions and Guidelines

a. The internet is a porous space, and you should expect that there is a possibility that anything you say or type could be recorded by some person or group. We want you to be aware of this reality. Given this reality, we discourage sharing of illegal activities in the Circle, but we will not (of course) censor anything that is said. Just keep in mind the realities of electronic communication in the modern era.

b. This heart circle is an important experiment. It will no doubt be gorgeously imperfect. Please keep your own notes on what you think works and doesn't work, so that you can share them with the person/s who will be documenting the circle.

c. . What is the talking stick? Faeries are used to having a physical talking stick that indicates who is sharing. Since we will not be able to pass a physical talking stick, we will make use of the list of chat participants (in the right hand windowpane) and proceed down the list both for introductions and heart sharing. When you are finished sharing, you could say "I pass the talking stick to (next person on list of faeries)."

d. Language: This weekend's circle will be facilitated in English, but we welcome faeries who speak other languages. Please speak/type the language you are most comfortable speaking.

4) Documenting the Experience: A number of us (including Cetacea from Texas, USA) will be helping to document the experience. If you have written comments, please send them to bartlett.cd@gmail.com. We are hoping to being to have regular on-line circles, and we want to make them as powerful as possible.

Though this is certainly late notice for all of you who have made plans for Samhain, for those of you still looking for something fun to do on Witch's New Year, we are having our usual Wednesday potluck at the Mountain. Ahhh... did I say usual? I meant to say we are having A Gore-May Potluck with Gonoway treating us to some of his tricks in the kitchen. And following dinner, we are walking out to the Ancestor Circle (aka The Dead Faerie Circle) for a celebratory Unhappy Hour!

Just got home after an unusually painless travel day, and couldn't resist saying *thank you* to the SMS stewards and to every other faerie at the gathering. As so often happens, the gathering was exactly what I needed at this moment in my life -- in this case, rest and rejuvenation and laughter and play. And it was such a beautifully theatrical gathering, with two plays and lots of talent. For me, this gathering was a sigh of relief that lasted for days. Much love to all :)

My name is Sunny. I am a graduate student in the Sexuality Studies program at San Francisco State University. I am conducting research on polyamory. The aim of my study is to explore how individuals in queer polyamorous triads discuss love in their relationships. I am in search of individuals in queer, long-term (one year or longer), polyamorous triads to interview. Individuals must identify themselves and their relationships as queer, and the triads must be three people who are all sexually and romantically involved with one another.

Participating in this study will entail a 45-90 minute one-on-one interview at a comfortable and private location convenient for both of us to discuss your experiences and feelings of love while in a triad.

Interested in hosting a videochat heart circle

Dear beloved faeries,

I have been recently playing around with my laptop videocam and thinking that I would like to conduct an experiment: a videocam heart circle. My plan is to use a website called stickam (www.stickam.com) that allows multiple people to be in a videochatroom for free. If you want to check it out, go to Stickam and click on the chat room menu. I have been hanging out in a fun chat called WETSU.

I know that there are good reasons to be suspicious or concerned about the ways that new technologies could impact the ancient heart circle technology, but I want to give it a try in a thoughtful way. I envision creating a closed chatroom at Stickam in order to have a heart circle on line with faeries.

So here is what I am proposing: If you are interested in participating in this video heart circle and (even if you don't have a cam-- we will deal with that later), send me your contact info to bartlett.cd@gmail.com

I will begin a conversation with those who are interested about how we would set up the circle, what ethical questions are raised by a virtual heart circle, how it would be facilitated, and other logistics. I will then write up a FFAQ (faerie frequently asked questions) that will summarize how we will do the circle. Eventually, we will choose a date and have our heart circle!

I see in the summer rfd there is a request for funds to buy Ha's 75 acres...60,000 i believe i read of 135,000 already raised.
Does anyone know if the goal is closer than when rfd was published? Last summer for Howard Switzer Green Party candidate
for Tennessee Governor I put together two events one at Bluegenes and One at Cafe Coco to raise funds..The Bluegenes one
was a Songwriters night, and the Cafe Coco one was a Karaoke from dusk till dawn. Now that we have all the new activity at the cafe at Outloud here in nashville. I wondered if anyone had thought about putting together a fundraiser like a rave maybe? I noticed yesturday there wasn't anything
posted on the Community bullitin board. But Then The Mt that Must not be named has always been Gay shy..about Nashville. It's so part of being evolved into Fairy's i guess. In anycase as The King of Greater and Lesser Pip..i.e..Timefire thats me..and as he who used to be The Prints and Wordsmith..way back in 84 when fairylands across the world were young..I just wondered if anyone was into putting together
a night of music..for more trees..

trying to get to the mountain for Fall gathering

Please please please, if anyone can share a ride to (and or from) the fall gathering at the mountain I would so appreciate it. I am starting out at Wolf Creek (sanctuary...Oregon... no some of us are nice... really.... I swear...) and would like to get back in time for fairie gold rush in n. Cali, but other than that have no restrictions. I unfortunately live more or less on the wages of the godess, and can only offer good company in exchange for any ride... The gathering covers a period from OCT. 26 - November 11th, with the intent of covering both the 31st as well as Lunar Samhain (the dark moon happening on the 9th of november.) Suggested contribution is $35 per day more if you can less if you can’t no one turned away for lack of funds... Please remember to pack for camping in cold wet weather, and please when thinking of offerings to the Samhain fire keep in mind that synthetics (ie plastics nylon, polyesther etc) are toxic when burned, so wear your faux pearls but please burn something else! If you wish to contribute effort torwards meals please contact Atomic on the land, we can always use inspired cooks! Indoor housing is only available on a special needs basis and must be reserved in advance. While preregistration is not necessary it is awful helpful... Return the slip to us by mail or email us with the info!

Fall Gathering Dates?

I know it's a bit early, and folks like us tend to plan at the last minute, but I'm putting together a few long trips this coming fall/winter and need to start my planning now. Anyone know the dates for Short Mountain Fall gathering?
I'm hoping to make it this year, then spend some time in Atlanta, head to to Albany to see the Familiy, then I would like to go to the Hostel in the Forrest, in Brunswick, GA. It's an amazing place that I recomend all of you to visit if yo find yourself int hat neck of the woods.

Public pagan ritual to save magnolia tree from developers in Asheville..

Okay, so there's this beautiful big magnolia tree in front of City Hall here in Asheville that is slated to be cut down by a developer who is building luxury condos. What's worse, he bought the land from the county commissioners for half its assessed value. And this Friday at 7 p.m., in front of City Hall, there's going to be a ritual planned by Coven Oldenwilde (the people who do the big annual Samhain rituals at the river park) to protect the tree. It's gotten a lot of publicity and should be one of those awesome Asheville moments when pagans, protesting Christians, and environmentalists all hash it out in public. I would encourage everyone to consider coming out to support the ritual.

My friend Ryan Bliss and I are working toward our calling to build an intentional community in the Fort Sanders area of Knoxville. I'm in a financial bind now and am unable to be physically present toward that. More often than not, persuns come to a Sanctuary for inner reasons -
for the space in time of introspection, greater awareness of self and sometimes even self-transcendence.

Persuns who do not come to a Sanctuary for reasons of self-understanding are often
effected by the context of being with others who are there to reflect on the Self. Sometimes only on the way back home.

Social environments can often be challenging with a multiplicity of intentions and impetus
that guide a persun to Sanctuary with additional dynamics for those pursuing Community.

----

Id be curious as to other persuns perspectives especially former Stewards or Caretakers -
on the role of Sanctuary at meeting individual social needs while maintaining spiritual needs given the diversity of gifts of selves and unique expressions of those we serve in Community.
